Goodyear’s Fayetteville facilty in the US was severely damaged during the deadly tornado storms that struck the state of North Carolina yesterday.

The storms that struck the southern state are estimated to have claimed 20 lives and according to local newspaper, the FayObserver, Goodyear’s tyre plant suffered widespread damage.

Spokesman for the plant Richard Evans said the tornado hit the northwest corner of the plant close to its powerhouse.

The plant is one of the area’s largest employers but Evans confirmed that there was only one report of a minor injury. Production has been suspended and staffing limited to maintenance and “defender” (janitorial) workers only.

Although power has been returned, the full extent of the damage has not yet been totally assertained and the plant is unlikely to re-open until later today at the earliest.

Video taken after the tornado can be seen here.

“Our first consideration was the safety of the workforce,” plant manager Billy Taylor told the FayObserver. “We are thankful there were no serious injuries resulting from the storm.”
