An excavator plummeted from a bridge in Revere, Massachusetts on Saturday morning, landing on underlying rail tracks and injuring the operator.
The routine demolition went awry when a floor beam of the bridge shifted and caused the excavator to tip, according to officials from Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
Crews subsequently had to use cranes to stabilise the side of the bridge being demolished and removed the excavator by about 12:30 pm.
Remarkably, the Caterpillar 345C L was unscathed and could drive off the fallen debris.
The 50-year-old operator of the excavator was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with a laceration to the head, according to police. His injury was not considered serious.
Both the Route 16 bridge and the tracks were already closed in both directions for the demolition.
