Konecranes has received an order for six rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes capable of lifting 40t and a stack of up to five containers at a time from DP World Maputo for its Mozambique port operations.

DP World Maputo serves as the main shipping terminus for many of the land-locked countries and locales of southern Africa, including Gauteng province, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Botswana.

The 16-wheel RTGs will be equipped with auto-steering, a driver-assisting feature that keeps the crane on a pre-programmed, straight path, stack anti-collision and a truck positioning system.

Meanwhile, the Truconnect telematics systems will provide remote readings to Konecranes’ global network of support centres to help resolve problems and reduce downtime.

Junaid Zamir, CEO of DP World Maputo, said: “Container handling equipment is key to operations, and these RTG cranes will add to our capability in this major market. We strongly emphasise reliability and efficiency, and the local support on the ground is important in maintaining our assets.”

Antoine Bosquet, director of sales for port cranes at Konecranes, added: “Our business continues to grow in Africa. With this delivery, we will add southern Africa to our growing presence in Africa, and I look forward to forging a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship with DP World Maputo.”

The order of cranes are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2016.
