Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced it will extend its programme that includes the trialling of a smart vehicle across Business Bay.
RTA and Dubai Properties announced the commencement of the programme in November 2016, with the trial run now extended until 22 February, 2017.
Up to 1,500 people have used the vehicle, spurring the decision to extend the trial run.Â
The trial operation of autonomous vehicles, each capable of lifting 10 persons – six seated and four standing – is being carried out over a 650m track in Business Bay District.
Electric-powered, the smart vehicles are completely environment-friendly and can continuously operate for up to eight hours at a speed of 10 kmph.Â
Designed to navigate internal roads in areas like residential districts and entertainment venues, the vehicles are fitted with four-directional GPS platforms and use laser sensors to spot objects up to 40m away.Â
The vehicle can slowdown automatically once an object approaches in a range of 2m and if the object gets any closer than that, then the vehicle comes to a complete halt, Dubai Media Office reported.
The programme in Business Bay follows the first and second phases of the trial operation of smart vehicles in Dubai World Trade Centre and the Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard.
