GAC EnvironHull, part of the global shipping, logistics and marine services provider GAC Group, has launched HullWiper: a new, remotely-operated hull-cleaning device that offers diver-free, cost-effective and eco-friendly underwater hull cleaning.
Despite only measuring 3,000 x 1,500 x 800mm, HullWiper is capable of cleaning up to 1,500m2 per hour without causing damage to anti-fouling surfaces. The machine is able to clean the vertical sides of a very large crude carrier (VLCC) – approximately 8,000m2 – in seven hours: half the time that the job would take a team of divers using conventional methods.
A clean hull can make a significant difference to a vessel’s performance. The reduced resistance results in greater speed, improved fuel consumption and decreased carbon emissions.
HullWiper allows cleaning to take place during loading or discharge, minimising the need for off-hire time. Residues and harmful marine growths captured during cleaning are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner; an improvement on conventional methods which involve discharging waste into the sea.
“Clean and green is the spirit of HullWiper,” said GAC EnvironHull managing director Simon Doran. “In an industry that is increasingly seeking environmentally sound and risk-averse options solutions, our cleaning service ticks all the boxes.”
With the approval of the UAE Environmental Department, DP World plans to use HullWiper in inner harbours and at all quays inside Jebel Ali Port.
