Freight management company ALS has safely shipped its longest single piece of cargo yet to Abu Dhabi.

The Netherlands-based company moved a 71m mobile offshore production unit riser from Dunkirk in France to the Mussafah yard terminal, Abu Dhabi last week.

A vessel with an unobstructed hold length of 75m was chartered to carry the cargo; narrowly fitting the 71.4 m long, 4.36 m diameter and weighed more than 448 tonnes unit onto its deck.

The shipping required thorough planning by ALS who handled the charter, loading and lashing plan, method statement, risk assessment and completion of the transport manual. A qualified surveyor was appointed at both ports to ensure the operation ran smoothly.

Low draft and restricted maneuvering space at the private jetty at Mussafah Terminal, meant the riser had to be shifted from below deck to above deck before the vessel was then ballasted up to safely unload.
