Nissan has unveiled what it claims is the world’s first vehicle to be powered by a solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC).
The zero-emission e-NV200 prototype, which was unveiled in Brazil, boasts a cruising range in excess of 600km.
Nissan’s SOFC-powered van runs on bio-ethanol electric power, and is compatible with multiple fuel types, including ethanol and natural gas.
Carlos Ghosn, president and chief executive officer of the Japan-headquartered automaker, commented: The e-Bio Fuel Cell offers eco-friendly transportation and creates opportunities for regional energy production – all the while supporting the existing infrastructure.
“In the future, the e-Bio Fuel Cell will become even more user friendly. Ethanol-blended water is easier and safer to handle than most other fuels. Without the need to create new infrastructure, it has great potential to drive market growth,” he added.
The zero-emission Nissan e-NV200 features a battery capacity of 24kWh, a SOFC output of 5kW, and a tank capacity of 30 litres.
Nissan stated that the e-Bio Fuel Cell prototype forms part of its ongoing commitment to the development of zero-emission vehicles and new automotive technologies.
