The Chinese gantry crane manufacturer ZPMC has announced a $170m contract to supply cranes for DP World’s Jebel Ali port expansion programme.

The order includes nine quayside cranes and 25 automated rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes.

According to ZPMC, a subsidiary of the giant China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), the cranes will be delivered in batches from 2013 to 2014.

A spokesperson for DP World told PMV Middle East that an official announcement of the order was due from the port company shortly.

Dubai Port and ZPMC have a connection which began in 2005, when ZPMC sold its first dual 40ft quayside crane to DP World.

More recently it delivered two Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry cranes to DP World Sokhna, in Egypt.

ZPMC dominates the global market for gantry cranes, in part due to access to lower-priced steel, which is a major factor in the overall cost of the cranes. Each STS unit can require up to 2000 tonnes of steel..
