Construction equipment giant Caterpillar is now offering its customers the option to purchase frontless hydraulic shovels weighing more than 100 tonnes to accommodate a wider range of specialty front attachments with greater capabilities and flexibility.

Caterpillar OEM Solutions is now providing the Cat 6015B through to 6090 range of hydraulic shovels in frontless configurations for mobile and pedestal-mounted applications. The power units for these machines range from 606kW to 3360kW (813hp to 4,500hp).

Frontless hydraulic shovels are typically combined with non-standard front attachments and the new Cat offering is aimed at specialist application in heavy construction, dredging and marine activities, quarry and aggregate scenarios, bulk handling and demolition.

The frontless range is available in diesel or alternatively in AC power, for stationary applications, while upper-only arrangements are also available for permanent installation on a pedestal, as common for dredging and material handling.

The upper can also can be supplied with or without the swing drive system. For applications requiring a large crawler undercarriage, hydraulic-shovel-based undercarriage arrangements are also available as are complete mobile platforms to support loads of over 100 tonnes.

The potential advantages of Cat Frontless Hydraulic Shovel arrangements include:

  • Optimisation through the use of just the components required
  • Accommodation of a wider size and variety of work tools
  • Increased stability in the control the bucket or other specialist tools
  • Leveraging of the durability and reliability of Cat undercarriage technology
  • Increased fleet commonality with machines weighing more than 100 tonnes
