Abu Dhabi Municipality (ADM) has highlighted the problem of concrete spillage on public roads at an occupational safety and health workshop for construction contractors, consultants and ready-mix concrete companies.
During the event, the authority stressed the need for contractors to prevent concrete from being spilt onto roads, keep roads and sidewalks adjacent to the worksites clean and build properly paved entrances to project sites, as well as safeguard the movement of machinery near jobsites.
On the disciplinary side, the municipality reiterated its commitment to inspect construction sites and slap violators with fines of up to AED100,000 for damaging public assets and infrastructure, and up to AED10,000 for failing to safeguard pedestrians and neighbouring buildings during work.
AMD also announced the drafting of a comprehensive emergency plan for roads and subsidiary roads to prevent the spillage of materials or other waste and protect public property moving forward.
Where a degree of spillage is unavoidable, the municipality further highlighted the need to provide the equipment and environmentally-friendly means to remove concrete sediment and other waste.
The workshop also reviewed the best practices to prevent spill of ready-mix concrete on public roads and areas surrounding construction sites, alongside the need for precautions to prevent the spread of cement dust and release of polluting gases.
Specifically, ADM called for the provision of vehicle and machinery washing stations on worksites – emphasising the need for tyres to be properly cleaned before vehicles and equipment leave the site.
The workshop also called for greater regulation of the traffic both on and outside of construction sites, and the need to enforce the existing allowable loading limits of commercial vehicles.
