Acciona powers tower crane with 100 kW fuel cell genset at construction site in Spain

Acciona has operated a tower crane powered by a portable 100 kW, hydrogen-based genset at the construction site of the Norte III Penitentiary Complex in San Sebastián, Spain.

This is the first demonstration of its kind in the construction sector worldwide in the use of portable generators based on hydrogen with a power range (100 kW) able to feed auxiliary equipment and site machinery.

The demonstration is part of the ‘Everywh2ere’ innovation project in which Acciona is participating together with another 12 European partners. The project, financed by the European Commission through the FCH JU (Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaken) initiative, consists of the development of portable generators that use hydrogen instead of oil-based products to generate energy, reducing CO2 emissions and the noise and fumes created by current electricity generators.

The EveryWh2ere project aims to develop 25 kW and 100 kW portable gensets that use hydrogen instead of oil derivatives to generate energy, reducing CO2 emissions, noise and associated fumes. Prototypes of the gensets will be demonstrated in different use cases and various applications across Europe, such as music festivals, temporary events and construction sites.

The Norte III Penitentiary Complex construction project was awarded last year to a joint venture involving Acciona, and the crane will continue to operate for the next three months.
