Construction of the Swiss and Russian pavilions and the Firdaus Studio by AR Rahman faced a common challenge – space constraints – which demanded a crane that could be setup and manoeuvred easily at the high-density job sites.

The contractors of these pavilions turned to Kanoo Cranes, the exclusive dealer of Spierings Mobile Cranes in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain, to deploy the Spierings SK1265-AT6 for lifting panels, scaffolding materials and other components weighing up to 1,000 kg.

The six-axle Spierings SK1265-AT6, known as the ‘Mighty Tiny’, is the largest mobile tower crane in the world with a maximum load of 10,000kg at radius of 13.2m, maximum tip load of 1,700kg and maximum radius of 60m. The crane can be driven, assembled and operated by a single operator, and additional ballasts or jib sections are not required.

At the Swiss Pavilion, the requirements including lifting material for the facade and HVAC installation. The Spierings SK1265-AT6 was operated for three days over a week, with a boom length of 36.8m, jib length of 60m, height under hook of 35m, and outrigger span of 7.9×7.6m. The maximum weight of the components lifted was 1,000 kg.

At the Russian Pavilion, the requirements included lifting multi-coloured tubes for the exterior of the building. The Spierings SK1265-AT6 was operated for two months with a boom length of 36.8m, jib length of 60m, height under hook of 35m, and outrigger span of 7.6×7.6m. The maximum weight of the components lifted was 500kg. Wooden mats were used to spread the outrigger load and protect the walkways.

Ahmad Wraikat, regional manager, Kanoo Cranes, says: “Both the job sites had space constraints, and therefore, Spierings was the only crane that could be used under those conditions, and Kanoo Cranes, the only supplier that could tackle the jobsite challenges.

The crane had to be positioned with two outriggers on interlock and two outriggers on the road. This stabilization had to be carefully planned, and the load had to be spread with wooden mats to protect all utility lines. The Spierings SK1265-AT6 helped speed up the pace of lifting and quick completion of the jobs.”
