The Barakah nuclear energy plant in Abu Dhabi is nearing its full output capacity of 5.6 gigawatts (GW) with the addition of the fourth and final nuclear reactor unit.
Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) announced the commencement of operational readiness preparations for the unit.
This milestone signifies a major step towards obtaining the Operating Licence from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), the UAE’s independent nuclear regulator, ENEC said in a press statement.
The announcement follows the successful commercial operations of Unit 3 earlier this year, which, alongside Units 1 and 2, contributes to an annual power generation of 30TWh.
Once Unit 4 becomes fully operational, the Barakah Plant’s total clean electricity capacity will reach 5.6GW.
This achievement will cater to 25% of the UAE’s electricity requirements, delivering over 40TWh of clean energy annually.
