Aftermarket specialist A-Map says it is aiming to help stamp out unsafe fake auto-parts: stressing that the real thing is miles safer and more cost-effective in the long run.

Imports of counterfeit spare parts is one of the downsides of Dubai’s role as a major hub for the global aftermarket. Dubai Customs esitmates that from 2009 to 2010 there was a 75% increase in counterfeit products, and the share of fake car parts could be as much as 70%.

A-MAP exports to Africa, Asia and North America and has grown by 300% in two years. Despite the company being on course to double in size by 2013, managing director Asad Badami warned that the high volumes of counterfeit products are an endangerment to both the local industry and drivers.

“We are determined to play an active role in stamping out automotive fakery which not only gives the customer terrible value for money in terms of performance, but can also transform cars into death traps,” said Badami. “On top of that, it is extremely damaging to the region’s automotive industry.

“You get out what you put in, so it is worth spending a bit more in the short term to ensure your car is durable and you and your passengers remain safe in their seats.”
