Konecranes has launched its BOXHUNTER model in a bid to reinvent the rubber tyred gantry (RTG) crane for terminal operators in the Middle East.
The Finnish-headquartered lifting equipment manufacturer conducted several studies to inform the design of its latest model. Consequently, the RTG crane’s cabin has been lowered to the height of the truck lane, placing the operator at “the heart of container-handling action”.
“We are very pleased to announce the launch of the BOXHUNTER, and are very much looking forward to offering this innovative crane to our customers in the Middle East,” commented Andreas Falk, port cranes and lift trucks sales director at Konecranes Middle East.
“We are confident that this outstanding container crane, [which represents] excellent value for money, will meet the needs of our clients,” he added.
BOXHUNTER’s operating concept is based on video and laser technology that Konecranes developed for its premium-end automated stacking cranes (ASCs). In conjunction with a network of video cameras installed at strategic points around the RTG crane, a sophisticated graphical user interface (GUI) inside the cab significantly improves visibility for the operator.
The model has been designed to meet the needs of Middle East terminal operators who are looking for the latest technology, but who do not require all of the features offered by Konecranes’ top-end 16-wheel RTG cranes. BOXHUNTER can deliver upwards of 15 container movements per hour, whilst offering high reliability and low downtime, according to the manufacturer.
Despite the unit’s reinvented design, Konecranes contends that BOXHUNTER is one of the most modular RTG cranes on the market. Its design makes it deliverable by regular container ship, and the crane can be equipped with additional safety-enhancing features such as DGPS Autosteering, TRUCONNECT, and Konecranes’ remote monitoring service.
