The Ford EcoBoost Police Interceptor has reclaimed its title as the quickest accelerating law-enforcement vehicle in its segment.
The 2015 model outsprinted its competition during tests conducted separately by the Michigan State Police and Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
The EcoBoost-powered sedan bested all of its V8-equipped counterparts, posting a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of just 5.85 seconds.
“We are thrilled to repeat as having best acceleration,” said Arie Groeneveld, Ford’s chief engineer for the Taurus, Explorer, and Police Interceptor models.
“Quickly closing the distance between an officer and a target vehicle is key to safely avoiding high-speed pursuits. Our police vehicles are built around officer safety, and outstanding performance is yet another demonstration of that commitment,” he added.
The Police Interceptor also took the top spot in Michigan State Police’s 0-100 mph (0-161 km/h) tests, securing a time of 14.19 seconds.
“Ford Police Interceptors are the only police vehicles to be pursuit-tested for three years in a rwo by both Michigan State Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department with traction control and electronic stability control safety systems fully engaged,” commented Jonathan Honeycutt, marketing manager for the automaker’s police vehicles.
“Our safety philosophy entails testing our vehicles as our agencies will drive them,” he explained.
The model proved faster than its competitors in the LA trials, achieving a similar time in the 0-60 mph test (5.9 seconds) and posting the fastest lap time (1:20.47) at California’s Auto Club Speedway. The Ford Police Interceptor also placed first in stopping-distance tests.
