The UAE’s Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT) has established smart traffic system to improve vehicle flow in Abu Dhabi.
The system has been designed to improve traffic flow in high-congestion areas, such as the intersections between sectional roads and main streets.
The smart traffic system will be used to control the number of vehicles that join Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street from sectional streets, based on the highway’s capacity.
The use of smart signals will help to avoid accidents and congestion, and will raise the levels of security and safety across the network, according to DMAT.
Vehicle counting and classification sensors and cameras will be used to monitor congestion levels.
DMAT’s Integrated Transport Planning Division said that the system will be implemented on several stages, starting with the exits that lead to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street.
The first stage will be activated at the road’s intersection with Sheikha Salma bin Butti Street.
