The UAE’s consumers are gradually shifting towards the adoption of energy-saving building items, a government official said.Â
Abdullah Al-Maeeni, the director-general of Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA), said the use of energy-efficient devices and tools in the UAE’s private-sector buildings and facilities is growing.Â

Additionally, the trend of using highly starred products is on the rise, whilst the deployment of low-rated devices is declining.Â
The total number of electricity devices and water fixtures featuring ESMA’s energy efficiency cards is 54,176, of which 35,000 are five-star products, and 19,000 are four-star.Â
A similar system was deployed by ESMA to rate the energy efficiency of water fixtures two years ago.Â
ESMA’s programmes are applicable to devices that are the highest consumers of energy, as well as newly imported electrical appliances.Â
Al-Maeeni said that ESMA’s programme for the control of trailers and semi-trailers that serves the UAE’s construction sectors, among others, has also achieved growth.Â
The system defines the safety requirements for trailers and semi-trailers manufactured locally, and includes the technical requirements for data plates, dimensions, weight, technical requirements for rear and side barriers, and the issuance of structural numbers.Â
Since the programme’s launch two years ago, the total number of trailers with conformity certificates has reached 19,645, WAM reported.
Speaking at The Big 5 2017 exhibition that is currently underway in Dubai, Al-Maeeni said: “ESMA focuses on creating the legislative structure that serves the government’s orientations: reduce energy consumption, promote sustainability by creating environment friendly solutions, and [achieve] savings in consumption.”Â
