Oman’s public authority for SMEs development, Riyada, has launched the first electric vehicle charging station in the governorate of Muscat.
Held in cooperation with Global Electric Vehicle Road Trip (EVRT) and Nama Group, the opening of the charging station at Intercontinental Muscat Hotel is part of the government’s efforts to promote renewable energy in the country, Oman News Agency (ONA) reported, quoting Dr Hamoud bin Khalfan al-Harthy, undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Education and Curricula.
The event is among the activities included in Global EVRT’s Middle East Electric Vehicle Road Trip initiative, a nine-day event scheduled to conclude on 26 January, 2018. The road trip, which started in Abu Dhabi on 18 January, covers the UAE and Oman.
“Along the way we will be opening new charging stations, visiting sights of sustainability interest, and enjoying adventure and relaxation activities, whilst putting our exceptional electric vehicles to the test as we journey through the most beautiful landscapes of this region,” Global EVRT said in a statement posted on its website.

Meanwhile, Eng Abdullah bin Said al-Badri, chief executive officer (CEO) of Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) explained that the road trip aims to introduce electric vehicles to the public, as well as showcasing the technologies associated with them.
Ben Pullen, founder and CEO of Global EVRT, added that there is still a lack of awareness among consumers about the potential of electric vehicles.
