The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is representing nearly 49,000 workers currently involved in a nationwide strike against General Motors.
Local union leaders from across the US met on Sunday morning after the 2015 General Motors collective bargaining agreement expired Saturday night and opted to strike at midnight on Sunday.
The UAW has made the following demands:
- Fair Wages
- Affordable Healthcare
- Share of Profits
- Job Security
- Defined Path to Permanent Seniority for Temps
A statement from the UAW said: “We stood up for General Motors when they needed us most. Now we are standing together in unity and solidarity for our members, their families and the communities where we work and live. We are committed to a strong contract at GM that recognizes our UAW members, who make some of the greatest products in the world and make GM so profitable.”
GM responded with an offer that includes:
- Over $7 billion investments and more than 5400 jobs
- Improved profit sharing formula
- Ratification payment of $8000

A statement from the company read: “Negotiations have resumed. Our goal remains to reach an agreement that builds a stronger future for our employees and our business.”
