GCC countries announce long-weekend for Islamic New Year

Employees in both public and private sectors will be entitled to take Hijri New Year holiday

The UAE, Kuwait, and Oman have announced a long-weekend or both the public and private sectors as the Lunar New Year draws near.

A new lunar year officially begins on the Islamic New Year, also called the Hijri New Year. Most Muslims mark the first day of the month of Muharram as the start of the Islamic year.

The UAE

Emirate of the Arabs The UAE’s media agency stated in November of last year that the Islamic New Year holiday would be observed on Friday, July 21.

It indicates that before the month is up, residents of the United Arab Emirates can anticipate another three-day weekend.

Kuwait

Dates for the next Islamic New Year holiday have been released by Kuwait. On social media, the Centre for Government Communication posted information about the Council of Ministers’ decision about holiday dates.

The Hijri New Year holiday is on Wednesday, July 19, and the next day, Thursday, July 20, has been designated as a day of relaxation.

Since Friday and Saturday make up a regular weekend in the nation, all government departments, agencies, and institutions will enjoy a four-day weekend. On Sunday, July 23, work will start up again.

Oman

To honor the Hijri New Year 1445, Oman has proclaimed Thursday, July 20, 2023, a holiday. Employees in the public and private sectors will both be able to take the holiday.

Thursday, which corresponds to July 20, will be an official holiday for workers in both the public and private sectors in remembrance of the anniversary of the Prophet’s honorable migration and the start of the new Hijri year 1445, according to a statement from the Oman News Agency (ONA).
