Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla, CEO of the Roads Transport Authority (RTA), has told the second International Transport Conference and Exhibition for the Middle East that Dubai will complete its rail and tram network by 2020.
Al Mulla said that the RTA had slashed the cost of time wasted in traffic congestion in the municipality from $1.6 billion in 2007 to $1.1 billion in 2009.
He also revealed that the RTA’s Strategic Plan for Public Transport is for mass transit to take the burden of 30% of journeys, with construction of a 318 km-long rail line and a 270 km tram line expected to carry a considerable amount of that load.
He also explained RTA’s on-going green initiatives the including the use of hybrid engine vehicles in Dubai taxi fleet and new buses powered by Euro-4 compliant engines.
