Volvo trucks will once again be seen on the streets of Baghdad after the Swedish manufacturer and partner Zam Zam Spring Group agreed a two-year deal with the Iraqi Ministry of Transport to supply 1,000 vehicles.
Volvo long-haul, construction and rubbish collection trucks will now be supplied to a range of Iraq ministries via Zam Zam’s dealer and service network across Baghdad, Erbil, Dohuk and Basra.
Volvo Trucks and Zam Zam announced they are also preparing to set-up assembly plant in Iraq.
At last week’s Leaders in Construction Roundtable, several manufacturers identified Iraq as a market with huge potential, with one participant declaring it the “next Saudi Arabia”.
Iraq has traditionally been a stronghold of Volvo’s Swedish rival Scania, which recently announced that it and local partner Qanadeel al Rafidain are to supply 4,000 trucks to Iraq’s Ministry of Industry and Minerals in a $472 million deal.
“Volvo is a very strong truck brand in Iraq and we are happy to re-enter the market in cooperation with Zam Zam Spring Group,” said Volvo Trucks general manager Iraq operations Stefan Soenchen. “We are ready to continue to deliver trucks and after sales support to our Iraqi customers and plan to develop our aftermarket presence in the country.”
