The RTA has been trialling GPS technology which will alert the authority and operators should drivers behave erratically or trucks fail to meet tyre safety standards.
Using technology developed by Astrata and Trakker Middle East, the trials in September used 40 trucks to test two systems which either traced vehicle movement or the condition of tyres.
The RTA said it is hoped the new technology could improve road safety and contribute to minimising traffic accidents. Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency said that scheme was part of the RTA’s truck-safety project called the Vehicle Defect Clearing System (VDCS).Â
“The new pilot technology, which is electronically linked to control systems programme via satellites, sends alerts to the driver, operator and RTA in case of a certain defect in the vehicle or if the driver is over-speeding, enabling accurate and full revision of the vehicle’s safety,” said Bahrozyan.
He said the GPS monitoring could contribute to raising the level of traffic safety, effective management of the heavy vehicle fleet and remote control of heavy vehicles.
