Chinese construction equipment manufacturer Sany Heavy Industries has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the company responsible for the first phase of the $7 billion new Doha Port project.
The deal will see Sany supply a variety of machines, including concrete pump trucks, excavators and crawler cranes. According to Sany, more than 60 pieces of Sany equipment are currently working at the Doha Port project.
The deal was signed with major Chinese company China Communications Construction (CCC), whose subsidiary China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC) was awarded a $879 million contract in March last year for the first phase of work on the port.
The four-and-a-half-year deal requires the firm to complete all excavation works, as well as construction of an 8km quay wall and an internal 5km-long rubble wave breaker.
According to CHEC’s website, the company recently marked the milestone of 3,000,000 safety working hours on the project.
Sany says that the port work will require the excavation of roughly 65 million cubic meters of earth and rock, which it says is equivalent to slightly more than 70% of the volume of China’s Three Gorges Project.
The deal also covers work on the construction of the Doha 2022 World Cup stadium, with Sany saying it will supply CCC with products such as batching plants to develop stadium facilities.
The deal was signed by Sany Heavy Industry president Xiang Wenbo, estimated by Forbes to be worth $1.1 billion, and CCC Chairman and Deputy Party Committee Secretary Zhou Jichang.
Sany chairman Liang Wengen, mainland China’s second-wealthiest man with an estimated fortune of $8.1 billion, was also present.
CCC is a Chinese state-owned infrastructure enterprise, which is wholly listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. The company is involved in infrastructure projects in more than 100 countries, and has assets in excess of 300 billion renminbi ($47 billion).
