Brazil has bought 520 new Mercedes Benz busses ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, the German auto-giant Daimler has announced.
The orders have come from two cities in Brazil with hosting rights in 2014, Fortaleza in Northeastern Brazil, and Ribeirão Preto, one of the largest cities in the São Paulo province.
Daimler provides around 60% of the busses in the public bus segment in Brazil, and says that it is expecting further strong ordering in the lead up to the World Cup.
“The public transport companies chose our vehicles because of their state-of-the-art equipment, low fuel consumption, and high profitability,” said Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses.
“Our vehicles create maximum efficiency, which is well received by our customers. This is also confirmed by our outstanding market position. We are currently providing 60% of Brazil´s city buses.”
Ribeirão Preto will receive 390 of the vehicles. The new fleet, which will begin to operate within the next months, is part of the local public transport concept aimed at improving the city’s traffic infrastructure.
