Caterpillar filled an entire hall at bauma China in Shanghai, with the 12,000m² display – the largest in the company’s history.
Highlights included six new products on display, more than 50 existing machines and the excavator used in the filming of the James Bond film Skyfall.
The indoor display was organised along the lines of the key areas in China’s 12th five-year plan, including road building, water and irrigation projects, railway expansion, airports, urban construction and energy development, with each of the areas featuring machines suitable for those projects.
There was also a nod to sustainability, which features in the five-year plan, symbolised by a garden area in the centre of the hall.
With a number of production facilities in China, the country is a key market for Caterpillar, and “Win in China” is one of the ‘Big 8’ imperatives in the company’s enterprise strategy.
New models at the show included the 986H wheel loader, with an operating weight of 42 tonnes, a quarry and mining wheel loader designed for emerging markets; a 772G Off-Highway Truck with a payload capacity of 47.2 tonnes; and the new 312D2 GC and 326D L hydraulic excavators.
Also on display were three vintage Caterpillar tractors, built in the 1920s and ’30s, and still in working condition.
