Volvo Construction Equipment has released an engine conversion kit for Tier 4i/Stage IIIb machines that will allow customers to sell their second-hand machines to markets including the Middle East where the high-sulphur content of diesel would otherwise affect engine operation.
Engines built for modern emission requirements in the developed markets are designed to run on Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD), and would be quickly damaged if they were run on the relatively high sulphur diesel used in the Middle East.
The kit will become available in the second quarter of 2014, and works by protecting the Volvo engines against high sulphur levels, while still meeting Volvo internal design standards.
The conversion kit facilitates the reliability of a machine after export, said Alan Berger, Vice President Product Platforms.
“We know that some of our customers export their used machines to countries outside of the US or EU and must operate on a different type of fuel. We want to assure customers that there will still be a market for Tier 4i/Stage IIIb-compliant machines abroad,” said Berger.
“There is increasing demand outside of the US and EU for high quality machines. Now with the conversion kit, Volvo machines can be sold in these markets, which was not previously possible.”
