Saba Engineering & Contracting is using a fleet of Volvo CE machines to sort and transfer scrap metal from its site in Mesaieed, Qatar.
The scrapyard is using a combination of Volvo EC240 and EC460 B-Series excavators to sort, crush, and shear steel into smaller, more manageable pieces. Two of the EC240 units have been fitted with magnetic plates to make it easier to sort through metal piles, while two others are equipped with specialised grabs.
“We use our Volvo machines 20 hours a day and each, on average, consumes 300L of fuel every day,” commented Saba site manager Yameena. “We have had the machines for six years and they are still in good condition and look new.”
The Volvo machines are driven by a team of 16 operators, and are being used to help meet steel demand in the Qatari market. The EC240 excavators boast 180hp turbocharged diesel engines. The units also feature hydraulics designed to accommodate recycling attachments, including shears and grapples.
Once the scrap metal has been processed, the retrieved steel is transferred to a haulier, which in turn, transports the loads from the Mesaieed site to Qatar Steel’s processing plant for melting.
The Qatar Steel plant in Mesaieed was established in 1978, and became wholly owned by Industries Qatar in 2003. It currently occupies an area of 707,000m2, with a further 375,000m2 reserved for future developments. In total, 1,650 people work at the plant.
Saba is contracted by Qatar steel to provide it with scrap metal. The excavators working at the Mesaieed plant were supplied by local Volvo CE dealer Araco.
