Volvo Trucks has launched the FE LEC (low-entry cab) for Euro 6 regions.
The latest model has been specifically designed for refuse operations and urban distribution applications. Volvo claims that the truck’s low-entry, flat-floor cab offers enhanced visibility and space for up to four people.
“There is a constant increase in the demand for efficient refuse transport and smart solutions for city distribution,” said Pernilla Sustovic, segment manager for distribution at Volvo Trucks.
“With the new Volvo FE LEC, we meet our customers’ needs even better than before. For instance, we are the only manufacturer to offer a refuse truck with a low entry and automated manual gearbox as an alternative to a fully-automatic transmission. Volvo I-Shift makes driving more fuel efficient, and the transmission’s low weight permits added payload,” she added.
The FE LEC is based on the latest generation of Volvo Trucks’ medium-duty FE. Its chassis, driveline, instruments, and controls are almost identical. However, the two models are differentiated by their cabs.
The latest iteration boasts an entry height of just 530mm, and with the kneeling function activated, this can be lowered by an additional 90mm. The FE LEC’s doors can be opened to 90°, and the floor of the cab is flat throughout. Furthermore, by placing the driver’s seat further towards the front of the cab, the truck’s designers succeeded in improving visibility to the front and the sides whilst creating space for three passenger seats.
Lars Franck, product manager at Volvo Trucks, said: “The Volvo FE LEC has been designed to make daily operations easier for the driver and crew. That is why we attached considerable importance to the practical details.”
The Volvo FE LEC is scheduled to be launched at the IFAT trade show in Germany on 5 May 2014. While the truck has only been announced for the Euro 6 market, its municipal-friendly features will no doubt be of interest to GCC operators as the region’s infrastructure and urban areas continue to grow.
