Volvo Trucks has revealed its intention to introduce the I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission system in autumn 2014.

The Swedish manufacturer will launch I-Shift Dual Clutch on its FH model. Volvo claims that the truck will be the first series-produced heavy vehicle in the world to sport dual-clutch transmission.

“When driving, it feels like you have access to two gearboxes,” commented Astrid Drewsen, product manager for drivelines at Volvo Trucks.

“When one gear is selected in one gearbox, the next gear is already prepared for the other. With dual clutches, gear changes take place without any interruption in power delivery. As a result, engine torque is maintained and driving comfort is significantly improved,” she said.

Volvo’s latest transmission consists of two input shafts and a dual clutch. This arrangement allows two gears to be selected simultaneously. The clutch determines which gear is active at any one time.

Volvo says that I-Shift Dual Clutch is particularly effective for long-haul journeys and for scenarios that require a lot of gear changing. The truck maker also claims that because less movement is imparted to a truck’s cargo during gear changes, the transmission system makes a big difference when carrying liquid loads.

Drewsen added: “For trucks, this gearbox will truly make a major difference to driveability. The heavier the transport and the tougher the operating conditions, the more you will gain with I-Shift Dual Clutch. Power-shift gear changes, where there is no interruption in power delivery, means that it is easier to keep up with traffic, especially on tricky stretches of road. The result is more relaxed and safe driving.”

Initially, I-Shift Dual Clutch will be available on the Volvo FH with Euro 6 D13 engines.
