Caterpillar has unveiled the 340D2 L hydraulic excavator, the latest of its D Series models to be revamped for the Middle East and Africa.

The machine builds upon the performance and durability of its predecessor, the 340D L, with a refined hydraulic system and a fuel efficient, Tier 2 Cat C9 engine.

The 340D2 L is the bigger brother of the 320D2 L, test driven earlier this year by PMV Middle East.

With an operating weight of 40,270kg, the model boasts a heavy-duty undercarriage, a selection of robust booms and attachments, and a comfortable cab.

The excavator’s 270hp engine has been tested thoroughly on the front line, and is approximately 7% more fuel efficient than its predecessor.

The 340D2 L’s hydraulic system operates at a relief pressure of 35,000kPa, and produces a maximum flow of 530L/m. This allows the unit to handle a variety of work tools, and high- and medium-pressure control circuits have been included to facilitate the use of attachments.

Operators can choose between two working modes – High Hydraulic Power or Economy – to match machine performance and application. Furthermore, the excavator uses boom and stick regeneration circuits to reduce the load on the hydraulic pumps.

The machine has been introduced to the market as part of Caterpillar’s strategy to redesign its D Series excavators for the Middle East and Africa markets.

The revamped models have been built to offer maximum fuel savings, reduced operator costs, long-term durability, and powerful hydraulic performance.
