Latin America’s first Liebherr LTR 1220 telescopic crawler crane has been flexing its muscles at a copper-zinc mine in Peru.
Since the beginning of the year, the unit has been toiling away in the Andes, almost 5,000m above sea level.
The crane’s owners, Gruas Alquileras SA, has stated that it is very happy with its investment. The LTR 1220, says the company, has handled the difficult conditions with ease.
Gruas Alquileras’ LTR 1220 is the first of its kind to be delivered to the Latin American market. With an impressive load capacity of 220 tonnes, it is used primarily for unloading and assembling the components of two bespoke excavators used at the mine.
The machine’s powerful telescopic boom and crawler gear have been designed to handle challenging terrain such as that at the Peruvian site. The LTR 1220 boasts short setup times, high manoeuvrability, and is able to travel with a full load.
Mining firm Joy Global Peru SAC is renting the unit from Gruas Alquileras on a long-term contract, and have also said that they are satisfied with the crane’s performance.
The Antamina mine complex is renowned for the production of copper, zinc, and molybdenum ore. It is one of the ten-largest of its kind in the world, with approximately 430,000 tonnes of material extracted daily.
