Volvo Construction Equipment has launched its first-ever 35-tonne excavator.

The EC350D boasts a Volvo D8 six-cylinder engine, is equipped with inline vertical, electronically controlled, high-pressure fuel injectors, features a turbo charger with waste gate, and sports an air-to-air intercooler.

The machine can also be purchased with an extra water separator to protect the engine and increase resistance against impurities in fuel, making it ideally suited to territories such as the Middle East.

The excavator has been designed to maximise production and efficiencies, according to its designers. The EC350D’s D8 engine delivers up to 10% lower fuel consumption than its predecessors.

To further lower fuel consumption, the unit is equipped with Volvo’s Eco Mode, conserving power with electronic pump-control technology. Eco Mode reduces the amount of flow lost through overload relief valves, whilst maintaining the excavator’s digging power and maximising its swing torque.

The EC350D has been created with heavy-duty applications in mind, according to Volvo. The machine’s boom and arm, idler frames, and travel motor brackets are reinforced with thick metal plates to distribute mechanical stress evenly. Additional side wear plates protect the arm-end bearing, and are easily replaceable.

Indeed, Volvo’s focus on simplified maintenance can be found elsewhere on the machine. The EC350D boasts an I-ECU monitor with a service-interval display to keep operators up to date with the excavator’s oil levels, filters, and water separator status.

The unit also features large compartment doors that open wide for easy access to service points, grouped filters, cooling units, and greasing areas.
