A mobile crane toppled over into a building adjacent to a construction site in Abu Dhabi, shattering windows and waking residents in the building on Sunday morning.

The crane, which belonged to Suwadi and Shams Contracting company, fell shortly before 9am near the junction of Sheikh Zayed and Hamdan streets. No injuries were reported, and the crane operator was said to be fine.

It’s the same site that suffered a similar incident in July 2011 when another crane toppled over and blocked the road. No injuries were reported in that incident either, but an investigation into the incident by the Abu Dhabi Municipality revealed safety violations, including defective equipment and inadequate supervision which led to the collapse.

Speaking to The National newspaper, Mohammed Salem, head of the communications department of Suwadi and Shams Contracting said although his company was still awaiting the outcome of the Abu Dhabi Police investigation into Sunday’s incident, the accident was something that could happen to any company and was not completely out of the norm.
