A Sennebogen 5500 is supporting construction on the fourth world’s longest suspension bridge in Turkey.
The 180-tonne capacity crawler crane is being used to lift sections of the Izmit Bay Bridge 64m above the Sea of Marmara, 50km southeast of Istanbul.
The machine – owned and operated by lifting specialist, Aydin Vinc AS – is being used to install massive bridge members at the site.
According to Sennebogen: “The flexible crawler crane is particularly suited for the job, thanks to its stable, wide-gauge undercarriage and 160kN winch. Even when under load, the heavy steel and precast concrete members can be transported and placed with precision.
“The Maxcab comfort cab, which can be inclined up to 20°, offers the operator an ideal overview of the work area,” added the manufacturer.
The Sennebogen 5500 boasts a 35,5m-long main boom and a 261kW diesel engine. The crane was supplied to Aydin Vinc AS in 2014 by the manufacturer’s authorised Turkish distributor, Forsen AS.
Once complete, Izmit Bay Bridge will stretch 2,700m, and its six lanes will be able to accommodate more than 5,000 vehicles per day. The opening of the bridge will also mark the completion of the highway from Istanbul to Izmir.
Izmit Bay Bridge is due to open in 2017.
