Volvo Construction Equipment has developed high sulphur conversion kits for its medium-duty engines, enabling customers to resell an expanded range of Stage IIIB machines into less regulated markets such as the Middle East.

The kit works by deactivating the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and replacing the diesel particulate filter and diesel oxidation catalyst with a conventional muffler. The conversion process is permanent, and engines processed using the kits can no longer be used in regulated markets.

The latest conversion kits are available for machines including Volvo CE’s wheel loaders, excavators, compactors and pavers. It is compatible with the Volvo D4H, D6H and D8h medium-duty engines, and allows the use of fuels with a sulphur content of between 500 ppm and 10000 ppm.

“The high sulphur conversion kit is a robust solution that allows customers to resell their machines into less regulated countries,” said Jonas Andersson, product manager for Volvo CE EMEA.

“The kit is installed using genuine Volvo software and hardware, ensuring the quality and reliability of the machines are not affected when the engine is converted. This conversion extends the longevity of the machine and its components, and is quickly and easily implemented by dealers.”

In total, six hardware kits and 28 new engine part numbers are needed to perform the conversion, before new software must be run from a Volvo back office to finalise the process when the physical changes have been made.

Volvo released its first conversion kits, for A25-A40 articulated haulers fitted with D11, D13, and D16 engines, and the L150-L250 wheel loader range, fitted with D13 engines, in December, and for EC340-EC480 excavators with D13 engines during the first quarter of 2015.
