Oman’s electricity sector is expected for new projects, aimed meeting the growing demand for power in the country.
Demand for power in the Sultanate grows at 10% per annum, and is expected to rise to 11% by the year 2020.Â
Oman Power and Water Procurement (OPWP) announced early this year that it intends to introduce new arrangements for power and water through independent producers.
These arrangements include introduction of an energy market in 2017 when long-term contracts signed with power plants are set to expire, Muscat Daily reported.
The new system will run in parallel with the existing system.
Thearrangements will also include a more flexible approach in concluding new agreements for the purchase of power by OPWP in a bid to enhance competition among existing and new plants, the report added.
The Sultanate’s electricity production grew by 9.6% in 2014 to hit 28,700GWh from 26,200GWh in 2013.
OPWP expects that the peak demand for electricity from the main grid will increase from 5,886MW in 2015 to about 9,133MW in 2020; an average annual growth of 11%. Â
