In the crowded market for all things telescopic and extendable — aerial work platforms, telehandlers and portable material handling equipment — a Genie is often what you need, explains Johan Gericke, territory sales manager for Terex’s aerial work platform in the UAE, Qatar and Oman.
Terex Equipment Middle East’s offering spans applications in construction, infrastructure, oil and gas and facilities management — with much of the business feeding into the glut of work in the UAE and Qatar.
“At the moment 90% of our business is aerial work platforms,” notes Gericke. “But in telehandlers, we’ve got a range of six machines, from the GTH 2506, which is the smallest, up to the GTH 5021 rotator. The workhorse is the GTH 4018, which is fixed, but comes with a rotator option — this is the most popular in the region.”
The GTH 2506 can lift a maximum two tonnes at its fully extended height of 5.79m, while the GTH 5021 can lift five tonnes at 21m, and the popular mid- to upper-range GTH 4018 can lift four tonnes at 18m.
“A lot of our machines are being used on smaller construction sites where they have to lift the bricks and pipes into place. We’re also providing a lot of smaller, more specialised machines to be used around buildings where it is confined and tight.”
Tailoring its product, Genie relaunched its telehandler range earlier this year to meet the growing demand for versatile, heavy-duty and efficient machinery on job sites.
“Our machines are based on the market leaders, but we’ve improved on them. For instance, where the market leaders can only lift to around 11.5m without deploying the outriggers, we’ve gone ahead and designed a machine that can deploy all the way up to 17m without having to put down the outriggers, which improves uptime.”
According to Gericke, the segment has been on a consistent upswing globally for several years, but especially so in the region.
“Oman is a medium-sized market that’s big at the moment. There is a lot of business and there are a lot of material handling enquiries at the moment, while the majority of the telehandlers that we sell in the region go into the country.”
Genie also has a range of manual lift-assisting aluminium devices, which it calls its Superlift Advantage or SLA range.
“We’ve got this range of smaller machines for ducting and other applications in warehouses where you can use a manual winch. We sell 200 to 300 of those a year in the Middle East.”
“We’ve partnered with a company called MBM, and they keep a rolling stock of these machines — 50 at a time. It’s an inexpensive machine to lift boxes and other materials.”
