Two quarries in Fujairah and Ajman have been closed down by the Ministry of Environment for violating regulatory requirements governing stone quarries and crusher units.Â
Periodic inspections at the quarries showed several irregularities, including the heavy spread of dust – which is one of the main factors that affects public health and the safety of nearby residents.Â
In addition, the belts carrying materials were not covered and not equipped with rubber curtains which prevent the spread of dust.Â
The move to close both quarries is in line with the Ministry’s efforts to ensure the strict compliance of these facilities with exisitng laws and regulations.Â
The Ministry also aims to find a balance between protecting public health and the environment and sustaining economic actitivities in line with the UAE Vision 2021.Â
Following the closures, H.E. Engineer Saif Mohammed Al-Shara, assistant undersecretary for external audit sector, Ministry of Environment and Water, issued a reminder to operators to strictly adhere to applicable legislations in a bid to avoid action being taken at other locations.Â
The Ministry plans to hold several workshops to ensure continuous business operations and that the facilities operate according to existing laws.Â
