A 60t Liebherr LTR 1060 telescopic crawler crane owned by Swiss contractor Clausen completed an extreme journey up to an altitude of 2,900m to help construct a mountain station and chairlift at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps.
After being transported to an altitude of 1,900m, the LTR 1060 demonstrated its off-road capabilities by climbing the remaining 1km on unmetalled hiking paths, including a 2km stretch at a 45° incline, over the course of five hours.
After arriving on site, the crawler crane demonstrated its crane performance over the course of several days, installing a steel structure for the mountain station before driving to site with the 16t chairlift engine and hoisting it into position.
The ability to travel holding a full load, or perform a so-called “pick-and-carry” operation, is a major selling point for telescopic crawler cranes.
After three weeks at altitude, the 60t LTR 1060 then had to tackle the downhill.
