Qatar Rail announced tunnelling work on the northern section of Doha Metro’s Red Line has been completed.Â
This milestone was achieved at the part of line between Legtaifiya Station and Qatar University.Â
Completion of full tunnelling works is expected later this year, following which, contractors will move towards architectural and systems operations, such as track, power supply, and signalling.Â
The completion of tunnelling works means over 70% of construction work for this section of the line is now complete.Â
Legtaifiya Station is the spot where the Red Line emerges from the tunnels and rises up onto an elevated section, running past Qatar University, and on to Lusail.
Tunnelling on the Red Line started in 2014, and the track spans 41km from Wakra to Lusail.Â
The northern section has been built by the Impregilo-SK E&C-Galfar Al Misnad JV (ISG) consortium.Â
Seven of the line’s 18 stations will be underground, according to The Peninsula.
Four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have worked on the line, digging an average of 30m per day at their peak.Â
TBM Lebretha achieved 42m on 29 March, 2015.Â
