Bauma 2016: The ins and outs of this year's show
Bauma 2016: The ins and outs of this year's show

Bauma 2013 set records in terms of the number of exhibitors, visitors and exhibition space: a total of 3,421 exhibitors from 57 countries, and 535,065 visitors from over 200 countries, converged on Munich for the event, which occupied a 575,000m2 space and was the largest trade show in the world by exhibition area.

Bauma 2016, the 31st edition of the world’s leading trade show for building materials and construction, mining and industry machines, vehicles and equipment, is once again booked to capacity and set to occupy all 605,000m2 of the vast Messe München exhibition centre.

This year’s event is also set to be diverse and international, with more than 3,400 exhibitors from over 50 countries participating and nine countries putting on dedicated presentations.

The event comes at a time when the fall in global commodity prices and slowdowns in many emerging economies saw revenues for the world’s 50 largest construction equipment manufacturers fall by 16.2% last year to $133bn, according to the ‘2016 Yellow Table’ report compiled by International Construction.

This is the lowest that revenues have been, and was the sharpest year-on-year fall, since 2009 — when industry sales fell to $109bn during the depths of the global financial crisis.

There is no doubt that the fall in oil prices has likely dampened exhibitors’ expectations for upcoming business from the region. However, broader trends see markets in the Middle East picking up, and in the mid-term, the high state investment in transport infrastructure in the Gulf will ensure above-average growth.

In Saudi Arabia, the building sector remains one of the fastest growing sectors of the country’s economy — with housing struggling to keep pace with demand — and figures placing growth in the construction industry at 6.7%. The construction sector in the UAE is similarly being buoyed by steady investment into residential projects — rising to $16bn in 2014.

Markets like North America and Europe were also among the most dynamic in the world for construction machinery in 2014, with US and European manufacturers growing their sales by around 19%. Rental companies are also emerging as a key driver by becoming the largest customers in the US. The market in Europe is also picking up, with the construction industry no longer hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The market in India is meanwhile expected to move forward again, with consultants at Off-Highway Research expecting the demand for construction machinery in the world’s seventh-largest country on Earth to return by late 2016 to the peak levels reached in 2011. In that year 72,000 units were sold, and by 2018, analysts predict that sales will rise to the region of 97,000 units across largely backhoe and wheel loaders, excavators and cranes.

In an indication of the broad optimism, Bauma 2016 was quickly booked to capacity — in defiance of the vast size of the Munich exhibition space — and built up a waiting list of unassigned companies wishing to attend.

The demand prompted the organisers, Messe München, to facilitate a compromise for those disappointed companies not yet assigned space by allowing them to attend and be included as represented companies in Bauma’s online directory of exhibitors, listed under their respective product categories.

Klaus Dittrich, chairman and CEO, Messe München, noted: “We want to give companies that we have been unable to accommodate an opportunity to call the Bauma community’s attention to themselves and their products and to make contacts during the fair.”

But he highlighted: “The response from the exhibitors and the high level of demand for space are truly amazing. Of course, we want to give as many companies as possible the chance to present at Bauma. Yet because of the level of demand, we were not be able to meet all requests for participation.”

The Bauma Innovation Awards will also be presented for the 11th time at Bauma 2016. The awards, a joint initiative between the organisers and German trade bodies, are presented to companies that excel in their role by exhibiting sustainable and cost-effective developments with ‘outstanding practical utility’.

Volvo Group: Building tomorrow

Volvo will arrive on scene, 50 years since its first ADT, with the articulated hauler to end all articulated haulers. Meet the A60H

Volvo Group is emphasising its long-term confidence in the market at this year’s Bauma 2016 exhibition, which will see Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) unveil several new flagship products, including some of the largest that the manufacturer has ever made.

It’s hard to keep secrets under wraps, especially when they are big secrets, and doubly so when the secret in question is a 55t-class articulated dump truck — the A60H —Volvo’s and the industry’s largest articulated hauler to date. The A60H will undoubtedly be a star of the show, though it is be far from the only news planned by Volvo for the event.

Jonas Gardetun, VP for Volvo CE, in the Middle East, noted: “Our range of Volvo articulated haulers are an important focus for us, as this year the Volvo articulated hauler concept celebrates its 50th anniversary — and after all this time we are still a pioneer and market leader in this product category.”

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Volvo’s popularisation of the articulated hauler, the company’s latest A60H will be joined by the first model, some six generations back: the DR631 from 1966 — fondly known as ‘Gravel Charlie’.

Gardetun continued: “The launch of our H Series articulated haulers has received a great deal of attention for our A60H model in particular. This 55t-capacity (60 short ton) model is the construction equipment industry’s largest articulated hauler to date and responds to a growing demand among customers for articulated haulers with larger payloads. The A60H offers a 40% payload increase on our A40 models — significantly lowering the cost-per-tonne ratio for customers and offering a viable alternative to rigid dump trucks and construction trucks when operating on soft, uneven or steep roads — allowing a similar amount of material to be hauled in a shorter cycle time.”

Drum Roll

While most of Volvo’s plans at Bauma remain a closely guarded secret, a total of 16 products will be launched, including the A60H. The manufacturer’s 8,700m2 exhibition space will also host an EW60E wheeled excavator, the EWR150E short-radius wheeled excavator and the EC35D, ECR35D and ECR40D compact excavators. The L50H wheel loader will debut alongside road machinery including the SD75B, SD115B and SD135B single-drum rollers, DD25B double-drum roller and a new D-Series paver.

Under the banner of ‘Building Tomorrow’ Volvo has also promised developments beyond the machines themselves. ‘Volvo Services’ will deliver ‘an entirely new approach to customer services’, aimed at boosting uptime, fuel efficiency and productivity, through the use of machine monitoring, machine control, efficient fuel usage, maintenance support and repair.

Volvo CE will be joined at Bauma by its Volvo Group sister companies Volvo Penta, Volvo Financial Services and Volvo Trucks — with the latter showcasing its latest generation of the FH, FH 16, FMX and FL construction trucks.

Together, the trucks will display the best of Volvo’s technical achievements in heavy trucks, including: automatic four-wheel drive; liftable tandem drive axle; Volvo Dynamic Steering for dual front axles; rear air suspension combined with a driven front axle (on the Volvo FMX); and electronic braking system for drum brakes. All in all Volvo is headed to Bauma confident in its ability to deliver innovation, productivity and a strengthened offering to its customers.

Caterpillar: Built for it, connected

Caterpillar will display dozens of machines, but equally important is the focus on Cat Connect’s array of machine control technology

Caterpillar and its German dealer, Zeppelin Baumaschinen will exhibit a suite of technologies, services and equipment at Bauma 2016 under the theme “Built for It.” Across a display space of more than 8,200m2, the company will showcase safety, productivity and equipment management solutions, with more than 60 Cat products, a large selection of work tools and dealer-delivered support services designed to make customers more successful.

Digital innovation and dealer expertise will feature prominently, including: Cat Connect’s paired Product Link and VisionLink platform, which captures performance and health data and makes it remotely available to decision makers; Grade and Compact, productivity tools that help operators move material faster, more accurately and with fewer passes; Payload, an on-board system for trucks and loaders that drives higher efficiency, shorter cycle times and lower cost-per-tonne; and Cat 360° Advantage, a commitment by Caterpillar and its dealers to match purchase offers to customer needs like higher productivity, reduced cost or lower risk.

Doug Oberhelman, Cat chairman and CEO, said: “Our main exhibit will showcase enhanced digital technologies that will help you be more productive, efficient and sustainable. Caterpillar not only has an installed base of three million units; more than 350,0000 of our machines and 50,000 engines, turbines and locomotives are already connected and providing performance and operating data to our customers.”

Dozens of yellow iron machines for construction, mining, industrial, waste and forestry applications will be on display, including the 336F LN XE and 352F L XE excavators, which incorporate an intelligent hydraulic system to deliver fuel efficiency gains, alongside the Cat Grade and Payload technologies to improve efficiency.

The new 323F excavator has Cat Grade with Assist, featuring automated boom and bucket movements and decreasing the operator input to increase the speed and quality of the work.

The D6N has Cat Grade with Slope Assist, the latest Cat Connect technology enabling dozers to work efficiently and economically on dozing tasks ranging from first cut to finish grade.

The TH3510D, a 3.5-tonne, 10m-reach telehandler adds a size class to the current range.

The 340F Long Reach excavator uses high-efficiency hydraulics to improve digging and lifting capabilities at extended distances.

The 966M XE wheel loader features advanced power train design and deep systems integration for higher efficiency and lower total costs.

Paving the way

Three new pavers will be part of the exhibition. The AP300F, AP355F and AP555F are built with intuitive, accessible technology and a quick-heating screed system that increases productivity and reduces crew idle time. Idle time, operator technique and jobsite set-up are key factors affecting fuel efficiency. All are powered by engines Tier 4 Final emission standards, but we also be made available in the Middle East at engines tiers that meet the local requirements.

The new CD54B vibratory drum compactor will also feature operator technology enhancements. In mining, the exhibit will also showcase the 6015B hydraulic mining shovel, built with class-leading speed and power and optimised to load Caterpillar’s 773, 775 and 777 rigid dump trucks in four, five and seven passes, respectively.

Caterpillar will also highlight the flexible financing and extended protection options from Cat Financial and new information about Cat rental solutions and Cat Certified Used equipment offered through the Cat dealer network.

CNH Industrial: Case on point

Case will present the 580ST backhoe concept, supported by five new D-Series crawler excavators

Case Construction Equipment will demonstrate its full line of equipment and services for the construction industry at Bauma, dedicating its 3,216m2 stand to CNH Industrial’s broad offering, including Iveco vehicles for the construction industry. The show will unveil the new Eurocargo 4×4, the Daily 4×4 steel three-way tipper, the Trakker 6×6 trilateral tipper and the Astra HD9 8×6 rear tipper.

However, the stand’s geography will draw visitors towards the most important products being unveiled at the show, including the 580ST backhoe loader, which features in-line cylinder geometry and an inner extendahoe system, though customers can also opt for Case’s existing system of overlapping cylinders — delivering a shorter boom with a lower transport height, together with an outer-sliding extendahoe.

However, the new in-line geometry on the 580ST delivers better visibility, with a narrower frame on the boom, and greater breakout forces — 55.2kN and 41N at the bucket and dipperstick, respectively — while the boom can reach a distance of 6.65m out from the swing centre. The 580ST retains the S-shape boom so integral to the Case backhoe, and which ensures that the effort is evenly distributed over the entire length of the boom, resulting in high stress resistance.

Alternately, the 580ST design with overlapping cylinders reduces the boom’s transport height to just 3.5m, making it easy to transport. On both designs, an integrated hydraulic coupler allows the operator to change backhoe attachments at the flick of a switch in the cab.

Franco Invernizzi, business director for construction equipment at CNH Industrial Middle East, said: “Bauma 2016 presents a great opportunity to showcase the great offering Case has for each market and to meet customers from around the world. Visitors from Middle Eastern markets will be able to see the Case 570T backhoe loader, as well as the new 580ST. We will also have a gravel pit nearby where Case machines will be at work, and although the machines available for test drives will feature Tier 4 engines, our staff will be on hand to explain the differences in the features available in the Middle East. This is an initiative we started at last year’s Intermat show, and it was very well received by our customers, so we are repeating it this year at Bauma.”

Also headlining the Case stand will be the new D-Series crawler excavator models. Case’s D Series made its debut at Intermat 2015, but Bauma will bear witness to five new models: the CX130D, CX160D and CX180D in the medium range and the CX490D and CX500D in the heavy. Like the previously launched models, the new additions to the range stand out for their productivity, with their fast cycles and their efficiency. They feature Tier 4 Final maintenance-free technology, but the big performance boost comes with the superior comfort and safety.

Also on display will be Case’s F-Series wheel loaders, designed for a variety of applications, alongside the manufacturer’s range of skid steer loaders, mini excavators and the CX80 midi excavator suited to urban construction. Case will also unveil new features for the Case SiteWatch telematics system.

Daimler: Actros to zetros

Daimler’s presence at Bauma will demonstrate the exhaustive range of Mercedes-Benz trucks and vans

Whatever load, whatever road says Daimler Truck & bus, which boasts it has perfect truck for any scenario and the widest range of construction vehicles.

As the top-selling truck family in the Middle East, the Mercedes-Benz Actros needs no introductions — its award-winning design combines cutting-edge technology with five decades of technical expertise and proven reliability.

In the open-air grounds at Bauma will be the Actros 3331K 6×4 from the tried-and-tested model series for export markets. With two driven planetary hub reduction rear axles, the model is highly resilient, and working beneath the cab is an OM501 V6, Euro II engine with an output of 230kW and 1,530Nm from a 12L displacement. Its emissions level corresponds to the requirements of the target markets, and the G210-16 transmission is manual, with hydraulic support as an option. The vehicle at the show will be fitted with a 14m³-capacity rear-end tipper body.

However, Daimler Truck & Bus believes in specialisation, and that every Mercedes-Benz truck is made-to-measure as a matter of course. It is thus keen to proselytise the region to the respective benefits of the Unimog, the vehicle designed for customisation and ‘indefatigable all-rounder on the construction site’, and the Zetros, Daimler’s robust cab-over-engine truck for challenging applications on and off the road.

Star truck

With permanent all-wheel drive and generous ground clearance on its portal axles, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog is designed to go where no truck has gone before. With its working and power hydraulics, as well as its power take-off shafts, it can also drive almost any equipment or tools that you might want to fasten or bolt onto it. Across the world, 270 bodybuilders and equipment manufacturers are listed as partners of the Unimog platform by Mercedes-Benz. While by no means exhausting the possibilities, this is an indication of the Unimog’s versatility.

All-wheel drive

Work combining crew and materials, like on oilfields, is the ideal application for the Zetros 3643A headed to Bauma — a three-axle model configured for six crew and a 36t gross vehicle weight (GVW). Permanent 6×6 drive and special 16.00R20 (front axle) and 24R20.5 (rear axles) tyres ensure it has maximum off-road traction.

Under the hood is an OM457LA six-cylinder in-line engine with an output of 315 kW and a Mercedes-Benz G240-16 manual transmission.

Sprint forward

Daimler’s commercial vehicles will also be represented by Mercedes-Benz Vans, which is presenting three vehicles representative of a cross-section of its vans for the construction sector.

The first will be a Sprinter 313 BlueTec crew-cab with a 95kW output, 3.5t GVW and Dautel three-way tipper that weighs only 370kg thanks to its aluminium structure. The second Sprinter will be the 516 BlueTec with a 5t GVW is positioned at the upper end of the model range, with an output of 120kW and 3.5t of towing capacity.

Presenting itself at Bauma as an all-rounder for tougher applications in the construction industry will be the all-wheel drive Vito Mixto 116 BlueTec, with its 120kW output, 7G-tronic Plus torque-converter automatic transmission and 2.5t of towing capacity. The vehicle combines a team of five workers with heavy-duty vehicle equipment installed behind. Safe driving is prompted by assistance systems like Collision Prevention Assist plus Blind Spot, Lane Keeping Assist, and Daimler’s telematics, FleetBoard.

Link-Belt: Taking to the terrain

Link-Belt unveils its excellence on all fronts, with two rough-terrain cranes, a telecrawler and an all-new telescopic truck terrain crane

Link-Belt Construction Equipment’s will attend Bauma 2016 with its RTC-80150 Series II rough-terrain crane, the 100RT and TCC-1400, and the all-new HTT-86110.

The 135t RTC-80150 Series II rough-terrain crane features a six-section, pin and latch boom with a maximum tip height of 94.8m, with superior load telescoping capability and five boom extend modes, and will be powered by a Tier 3 261kW Cummins QSL 8.9L engine. Like all six-wheel rough-terrain cranes built by Link-Belt, the RTC-80150 Series II will transport with two overflow loads and assemble in less than an hour without assistance from a helper crane.

The 90t 100RT rough-terrain crane features a maximum tip height of 79.8m, coming with a three-piece, bi-fold, on-board fly with an integrated 3m section available, and has one-load, two-line lift procedures. Operation of the 100RT is easy with only four boom extend modes and the ability to telescope under load. Under the hood is a Tier 3 201kW Cummins QSB 6.7L engine with unrivalled service access.

The 127t TCC-1400 will boast the longest boom length for a telecrawler in its tonnage class, with a six-section power pin-and-latch boom measuring 59.5m and an on-board three-piece, bi-fold lattice fly will give the crane a maximum tip height of 78m. The TCC-1400 offers capacity at radius that rivals lattice crawler cranes with a similar base rating. The TCC-1400 also features an electronic inclinometer providing digital readout of list angle and a new auto-idle feature that automatically reduces engine RPMs to idle speeds if no function is used for ten seconds, and resumes pre-set RPMs once any function is re-engaged by the operator.

However, introduced for the first time at the show will be the HTT-86110 telescopic truck terrain crane, featuring simple, all-wheel steer capability for optimum crane manoeuvrability in congested spaces. Steerable rear axles lend the HTT-86110 exceptional agility and with four steering modes — independent front, independent rear, combination, and diagonal — the crane can easily move in and around jobsites.

The main boom on the HTT-86110 measures 50m, outreaching the truck crane competition and challenging European all-terrain cranes in the same tonnage class. The turning radius is less than 8.3m from the centreline of the tyre, comparable to other four-axle all-terrain cranes. The on-board, three-piece fly pinning design is focused on ease of assembly and disassembly.

MAN Truck & Bus: One small rev for MAN

MAN Truck & Bus will showcase the versatility of its TG-Series trucks and demonstrate the power of the new D38 engine with its 500+hp

MAN Truck & Bus will use its space at Bauma to showcase its expertise in the construction sector. Its display will include a crane tipper from the TGL series, a two-axle MAN TGS with HydroDrive as a semi-trailer tractor, a payload optimised truck mixer on a four-axle MAN TGS, a MAN TGS designed for the mining industry and a three-axle MAN TGX tipper with the new D38 engine with a 50t GVW.

Industry flagship

MAN is showcasing the powerful D38 engine in the TGX series for the first time at Bauma. With an engine power of over 500hp, it can transport heavy loads and achieve high average speeds. Typical applications include tilting articulated trains, 6×4 tippers used with trailers, or heavy-duty roll-off skip loaders.

The MAN TGX with D38 engine provides top performance for heavy-duty transport. If low-bed trailers carrying heavy-duty machines need to be pulled in traffic, then the TGX D38 can provide up to 560hp to move a 120t GVW train with ease. MAN is adding the TGX D38 to its product range in normal as well as in medium design heights, and with tough steel bumpers.

The two-stage turbochargers characteristic of MAN engines also means the six-cylinder in-line engine with 15.256cm3 displacement reaches its nominal torque of 2,700Nm at 930rpm. The full torque can be used in a wide torque range between 930rpm and 1,350rpm. This means that in traction applications, TGX D38 draws upon great power at low speeds, changes gear at an early stage and keeps torque high in high gears.

The four-axle MAN TGX 41.640 8×4/4 combines the most powerful version of the D38 engine and the MAN TipMatic TX with the standard converter-clutch unit. Thanks to the strong torque of 3000Nm, even 250t heavy loads can be moved smoothly. The converter-clutch unit allows for particularly precise shunting in tight spaces, on inclines and with heavy loads.

Constant renewal

MAN switched the TGX D38 series over to the new TipMatic TX gearbox generation in 2015. Its direct-drive version is designed for the high torque of between 2,500Nm and 2,700Nm produced by the D38 engines. The TX gearbox provides the customer with several functions particularly suited to the construction sector, including a gradient sensor that takes topography into account when selecting gears and a rocking-free function to pull away from soft ground.

At Bauma 2016, MAN will launch a new light hypoid tandem axle unit for payload-sensitive transport tasks which compared to fitting a planetary axle, weighs in approximately 280kg lighter, and compared to the normal hypoid axles currently available with a 13t load capacity, achieves a weight advantage of 180kg. Slightly less diesel is also used compared to vehicles fitted with planetary axles. In a direct comparison of hypoid axles, the new axle construction — designed for a 11.5t payload — also offers approximately 4cm of additional ground clearance.

Hitachi: attain zen with Zaxis

Hitachi Construction Machinery promises to put on a show as it unveils the new Zaxis-6 excavators

Hitachi Construction Machinery will be among the leading manufacturers at Bauma 2016 and will be showcasing a wide range of services and more than 40 machines on show, from the new compact wheel loaders to the latest quarrying and mining machines.

The 5,600m2 display will be modelled on Hitachi’s ‘No compromise’ marketing campaign, which emphasises how Hitachi owners can ‘demand more’ from the new Zaxis-6 excavators and ZW-6 wheel loaders, some of which will be unveiled to the general public for the first time in Munich.

Joining the medium ZX250LC-6, ZX300LC-6 and ZX350LC-6 crawler machines will be the latest ZX490LCH-6 large excavator, with further models to be unveiled at the event. These will be supported by the introduction of several new special application machines, including the ZX350LC-5 excavator with a 30-metre telescopic arm; and the ZX135US-5 for tunnelling applications.

Hitachi’s Zaxis-6 excavators have already proven their reliability and performance, and the new models are designed to build on this by delivering the utmost operational efficiency.

Hitachi owners and other visitors will also be able to test their driving skills on an excavator simulator based on the ZX250LC-6.

The Hitachi stand will also feature the ZW220-6 and ZW310-6 wheel loaders, and reveal a new compact wheel loader range: the ZW65-6, ZW75-6 and ZW95-6, which Hitachi is confident will underline its reputation for high-quality engineering and tough products.

“The work for Bauma 2016 started right after the close of the previous event three years ago,” said Moriaki Kadoya, Hitachi president.”

“Our team has worked hard to assemble what will prove to be one of the most creative and distinctive stands, not only in Hitachi’s history, but also at this year’s fair. With around 40 construction and mining machines on display — ranging from light compaction equipment to a dump truck — we are convinced that Hitachi will have something for everyone.”

Doosan Infracore: From heavy to portable

Doosan looks to promote its telehandlers with a three-year warranty, on top of Bobcat compact excavators and Doosan wheeled excavators

Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment is presenting every aspect of the company’s business at Bauma 2016, encompassing many Doosan Heavy, Bobcat and Doosan Portable Power product launches.

Gaby Rhayem, regional director for the Middle East and Africa, commented: “As the world’s biggest exhibition, Bauma is always a great shop window for Doosan-Bobcat and we look forward to welcoming visitors from the Middle East and Africa to our stand.

“The 18m T40180 telehandler is one of four new generation rigid frame telehandlers from Bobcat being shown for the first time at Bauma, alongside the 6m TL358, 10m T35105 and 12m T36120SL models — all of which are covered by a new standard three year warranty that is being launched by Bobcat.”

This warranty is now available as standard in the Middle East on all the rigid frame models from the 5m T2250 telehandler through to the top-of-the-range T40180 model, manufactured at the major Bobcat plant at Pontchâteau in Loire Atlantique, France. The warranty is intended to demonstrate Bobcat’s commitment to the market to enhance customer confidence and increase resale values for Bobcat telehandlers, which will in turn be complemented by an impressive display of Bobcat’s market-leading ranges of new generation compact loaders, compact excavators and attachments.

The Bobcat S450, the best-selling skid-steer loader in Middle East, will be at Bauma for the first time and in both static and demonstration areas, together with the new E17, E19 and E20 Bobcat compact excavators, and the T590, T650 and T770 Bobcat compact tracked loaders — models popular in the Middle East.

Rhayem noted: “Much of the success of the Bobcat range is based on the 160 attachments available for use on the machines. Bobcat’s ‘Tough Tools’ initiative will be one of the most exciting elements of the stand at Bauma.”

The Doosan Heavy display will include the new 5t DX57W-5 wheeled excavator which has a 42.5kW Doosan D24 four-cylinder engine that provides increased power at lower costs, consuming 15% less fuel in factory tests.

The new 14t DX140LC-5 and 15t DX140LCR-5 crawler excavators are powered by Perkins 1204F engines, which deliver the power and torque of larger engines with a smaller displacement.

Doosan is also revealing its medium-sized DX140W-5, DX165W-5 DX190W-5, DL200-5 and DL250-5 wheel loaders for the first time.

Doosan Portable Power is meanwhile launching the 400 kVA G400 and 500kVA G500 generators — redesigned to offer increased reliability, high performance and a wider choice of features to suit various temporary power applications.

Rhayem added: “The Doosan portable compressor range is comprehensive, comprising over 20 different models with free air deliveries of between 2m³/min and 45m³/min and operating pressures of between 7bar and 35 bar.

“In addition, Doosan compressors can be equipped with a ‘bunded base’ option, providing a fully contained base to ensure that all fluids (fuel, oil and water) stay within the compressor for the purposes of environmental safety.

“The smaller compressors are aimed at a wide range of applications in plant hire, construction and general industry. Higher pressures and greater air capacities are designed for more specialist applications such as abrasive blasting.”

Manitowoc Cranes: Build something real

Manitowoc Cranes keeps its priorities straight — a return for the customer — with top product and sophisticated support services

Manitowoc Cranes will present a host of products, including several notable innovations, on its stand at this year’s Bauma 2016 trade show, which will mark the first time the company participates in a major exhibition as a standalone company following its separation from the Manitowoc Company in the first quarter of 2016.

Utilising a larger area than at Bauma 2013, Manitowoc will be presenting a number of cranes, and several new products that offer customers better return on their investment.

Larry Weyers, executive vice president of Manitowoc Cranes, said Bauma 2016 will be a landmark event for the company.

“We are excited to be at Bauma 2016 for the first time as an independent business and at the start of a new chapter in the history of Manitowoc Cranes,” he said. “But some things haven’t changed. For us, our customers remain our primary priority and we are focused on helping them achieve more.

“As a company we talk about our desire to ‘Build Something Real’, which means building cranes that customers need and delivering benefit to our customers in five key areas: return on investment; performance; quality and reliability; customer support; and agility.”

Manitowoc will be showcasing its range of value-added support services, including Manitowoc Crane Care, its customer support division; EnCORE, its refurbishment and remanufacturing arm; Lift Solutions, its in-house engineering team that handles special customer requests for machinery, products or lifts; and Manitowoc Finance. These services are all designed to help Manitowoc crane owners get the most from their purchase and the fastest possible rates of customer payback.

Products that the company will reveal at the show include a new Grove rough-terrain crane, two new Grove all-terrain cranes and a crane from the completely new range of MDT Crane Control System (CCS) tower cranes.

The Grove rough-terrain crane is the GRT8100, and it is among the first new Grove crane designs since the company introduced its pioneering Product Verification Center (PVC) at its factory in Pennsylvania. The PVC allows Manitowoc to conduct unparalleled testing on components to drive the development of more productive and reliable cranes. At present, Manitowoc is the only crane manufacturer operating a facility comparable to the PVC.

There will be three units all making their first trade show appearance from Grove’s range of all-terrain cranes, built at its plant in Wilhelmshaven, Germany — two of them new models, the GMK5250L and GMK4100L-1, which utilise an innovative new single-engine design that delivers class-leading capacities. The existing GMK6400 will also be on display.

Potain cranes will also feature strongly on the Manitowoc Cranes booth with both self-erecting cranes, including the popular Igo M14, which launched at Bauma 2013. From the top-slewing line will be the MR418 luffing jib crane, which, with a maximum capacity of 24t, is one of the largest luffing jib cranes from Potain. The MR418 will make its first appearance at a European show alongside the MDT389 and MDT219 — both of which are notable for their capacity and size, allowing contractors to make cost and time savings on projects. The MDT 389, with a 16t maximum capacity, is the largest crane in the new CCS topless range, while the MDT219 is the largest model in the new MDT CCS City Crane range and is available in either an 8t or 10t version.

Ammann: Ammann with a plan

Family firm Ammann delivers on its inventor status with the prototype for an autonomous compactor and prolific patent-pending products

Ammann, a sixth-generation family business producing mixing plants, compactors and asphalt pavers, will be at Bauma with its largest ever booth to showcase the products that prove the company’s commitment to being an industry leader, through both outside acquisitions and internal innovations.

The booth will feature 17 new products and several prototypes, including Ammann’s auto-nomous vibratory plate compactor — the first on the market — which covers a jobsite without an operator, providing a high compaction output at a greatly reduced operating cost.

The prototype is easy to use, with the operator setting the boundaries by remotely navigating the plate around a jobsite perimeter. Once the machine detects the closed border, it calculates a strategy and compacts the space strip by strip, supported by a GPS system, an electronic compass and collision detection. The plate delivers high-performance compaction while reducing labour, fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

Ammann will also be displaying concrete plants and mixers developed by Ammann Elba — the company created when German-based Elba was acquired in 2014 — which continues to be an industry leader, as proven by its new concrete-mixing plants on display at the booth.

Ammann’s products include pavers, forward-moving vibratory plate and soil compactors, pneumatic and trench rollers, two articulated rollers with the Ammann Compaction Expert (ACE) control system, and asphalt plants.

The wheeled AFW/T 350-2 and AFW/T 500-2 deliver the reliability and the simple operation that Ammann pavers are known for, and are the best choice when mobility is essential, while the tracked versions provide improved traction in challenging underfoot conditions. The next generation of Ammann’s wheeled mini paver, the AFW 150-2, has also been released, and features a larger auger (120mm diameter compared with the previous 100mm) that ensures proper material distribution along the screed.

The APF 1133, APF 1440, APF 1450 and APF 2050 forward-moving vibratory plates represent efforts to direct compaction energy toward the material and away from the operator. The compactors feature Ammann’s patent-pending Z-buffer, which isolates the guide hand and reduces operator fatigue and is why Ammann compactors exceed the strictest regulations.

The ARS200 and ARS220 feature new cabs and intuitive controls. The optional ACE system provides quality control, reduces machine wear and make a cost saving. The ARS compactors also incorporate popular existing features, including the no-rear-axle concept with fully hydrostatic drive and Ammann’s dual vibratory and amplitude systems to speed compaction.

The ART 240 pneumatic-tyred roller utilises a front isostatic oscillating axle and a rear-drive propulsion system to provide the correct power, regardless of tyre pressure or ballast weight.

The new ARX90 and ARX110 tandem rollers combine back-and-forth oscillation with the compaction output seen on previous tandem rollers. Adding oscillation eliminates about 90% of the stress to the surroundings caused by a traditional vibratory system by reaching compaction faster.

The new Ammann ARR1575 trench roller utilises a Yanmar engine that provides excellent power and a reduction in noise and vibration. Its productivity can be improved with easy-to-install extension kits that stretch drum widths from 640mm to 850mm. The ARR 1585 is the skid-steered version of Amman trench roller and extends the range to further applications.

The new QuickBatch container plants is engineered for cost-effective transportation and installation while delivering the productivity typically associated with stationary facilities. QuickBatch employs the ‘container principle’ logistics concept whereby its core components, including the dryer/filter units and mixing tower modules are provided in housings that can also serve as certified transport containers.

The Prime 100 has expanded Ammann’s asphalt plant line by offering a capacity of 100 tonnes per hour — functioning as a smaller, highly mobile version of the popular Prime 140.

The new CBS Elba concrete mixing plant is designed for small- to medium-sized businesses seeking flexible concrete plant solutions. Based on customers’ needs it offers output ranges from 105m³/h to 160m³/h and can accommodate EMS and EMDW single-shaft and twin-shaft mixers, and both stationary and semi-mobile operation.

The CBT 60 Elba compact concrete mixing plant has also been launched with an hourly output rate of 58m³/h. The entire compact line-up will provide performances of between 30m³/h and 130m³/h. The CBT 60 has an Elba EMS 1000 single-shaft mixer and an integrated linear batcher for two to four aggregates.

Genie: Genius in a bushnell

Genie revisits its maker, 50 years since its emerged from a garage, and celebrates Bauma with four products and a maintenance protocol

This year represents Genie’s 50th in the industry, and the company plans to mark the milestone with the launch of four new products at Bauma 2016. In all, Genie will be celebrating its golden milestone with up to 20 of its latest and most popular models, featuring new working heights, extra capacities, advanced power-source technologies and increased operator protection. However, this year’s show will also stage the premier of two new Genie Z-boom lifts, a new GTH-telehandler and a re-designed Genie vertical mast lift.

“From Bud Bushnell’s garage in 1966, to the 4,500 team members serving customers around the world today, our customers have trusted us and helped us build and define the aerial industry, and to offer people ways to work at height safely,” said Matt Fearon, president Terex AWP. “Genie is the story of teamwork, and it is through working with our customers that we will continue to find new solutions and opportunities to take them higher — 50 years is just the beginning.”

In addition to a host of birthday surprises, throughout the event, Genie team specialists will be on hand for customers to learn how its ‘New Maintenance Protocol’ and Genie Service Solutions (GSS) offering can simplify and make their business more profitable.

The Maintenance Protocol, for instance, helps lower total cost of ownership and drive rental returns on invested capital for owners of Genie S- and Z-boom lifts through reduced scheduled maintenance processes. Genie will also be presenting new territories where GSS is now in action to significantly increase machine uptime and raise rates of utilisation, while reducing maintenance costs by up to 25%.

The new Genie Z-60/37 FE boom lift provides two modes of operation: full-electric, which can work for a full day on a single charge and a hybrid mode, which provides more than a week of run time on a tank of diesel.

For extreme conditions or after heavy full-electric operation, the hybrid power system can provide a bulk charge within four hours. The hybrid system can also provide power directly to the four-wheel AC drive motors, allowing the system to combine the power of the diesel generator and the 48V DC battery pack.

Adam Hailey, a product manager at Terex AWP, noted: “Our new Z-60/37 FE boom offers the advantage of being sufficiently lightweight and compact to handle tasks in confined spaces. It is equipped as standard with foamed-filled, all-terrain tyres or optional foam-filled, non-marking all terrain tyres, which add to the machine’s outdoor and indoor versatility.”

The four-wheel drive machine offers 45% gradeability, ground clearance of 33cm and is capable of travelling 25% faster than typical diesel-powered units. It also has fully sealed AC motors that work under 91cm of water. At a working height of 20.15m, a horizontal reach of 11.15m, a stowed length of 8.15m and a weight of 7.756kg, it is also easily transportable.

Wirtgen: Paving the competition

Now armed with an armada of five brands, the Wirtgen Groups has ascended to the point of total vertical integration within its segment

Wirtgen, in its quest to ever grow and exponentiate its portfolio of products and services for the customer, will at this year’s Bauma exhibition be presenting itself together with its latest acquisition, Benninghoven, for the very first time. With an exhibition area of 11,712m², roughly 100 exhibits and a new identity, the Wirtgen Group — with its motto ‘close to our customers’ — will be showcasing its innovation and technical expertise in the road and mineral technologies sector.

Now that Wirtgen has joined forces with Vögele, Hamm, Kleemann and Benninghoven, the Wirtgen Group is the first and only company worldwide to cover the complete process chain in road construction with its own technologies: from crushing and screening, through mixing, paving and compaction to milling and recycling. Each of the five product brands specialises in its own field and focuses on the further development and enhancement of its own technologies. This generates immense innovative power.

Brand breakdown

In the field of cold-milling machines, Wirtgen is presenting two brand new machines for road rehabilitation: the W120Ri new generation small milling machine is a mobile rear loader on wheels. The W150CFi is a front loader and the most powerful model in the new compact class.
