An apprentice from Terex Cranes has been named the world welding champion at this year’s Arc Cup.
Elias Sutter, an apprentice from Zweibrücken in Germany, came first in his discipline of hand arc welding at the completion, which is designed to recognise the world’s best young welders.
Terex Cranes’ German team secured overall second place at the competition, which took place in China last week.
Commenting on his success at the tournament, Sutter said: “For me, just getting to the world championships and competing against the best young welders in the world was in itself a fantastic success. I can hardly believe that I have now actually won the title.”
Klaus Beulker, Terex Cranes’ managing director and senior director for operations in Zweibrücken, added: “The fact that our apprentice Elias Sutter competed in the world championships in Beijing is further evidence of the high level of training at our Zweibrücken site, which has for a long time been among the best in the world.”
Sutter qualified for the four-man German team by winning the hand arc welding section of the national Jugend schweißt, or ‘young welders’ competition in September 2015. A month later, the German team went on to secure its place at the world championships in Beijing after securing second place at the European Welding Cup in Cambridge, UK.
Heribert Bussmann, Terex Cranes’ group vice president of global engineering – product management and marketing, said that the German team’s success at the Arc Cup demonstrates the importance of his firm’s commitment to the development of young talent.
“Welding is a core competence in the construction of large cranes, and with our Terex Cranes and Demag brands, we are a world-class player in this field. This is due to our highly trained employees who, like Elias Sutter, have been outstandingly well trained by us,” he concluded.
