Al Fairuz, the distributor for Terex Trucks in Oman, has completed the delivery of an order signed with Oman Cement Company (OCC) for two of its dump trucks for a quarry operation near Muscat.

The order was secured late last year after Al Fairuz wasted no time in submitting a bid on behalf of Terex Trucks for the tender, with its senior sales manager, Neeraj Jha, immediately visiting the job site and coming to the conclusion that the 55-tonne capacity TR60 was best suited to the task.

“The trucks fit the requirements perfectly and it was clear from early on their specifications would optimise the efficiency and productivity of the working day at the Oman Cement Company,” said Jha.

Fitted with a Cummins six-cylinder, 19-litre engine, 522kW of gross power and 2,981Nm of torque, the TR60’s high output is also down to a drivetrain gear reduction that provides excellent rimpull, powering the rigid hauler up the steepest inclines and when the going gets heavy.

This will be essential as TR60 clock up the hours at the OCC in no time, working three eight hour shifts each day, collecting limestone, quartzophyllades, iron ore and kaolin from the quarry, and transporting the blasted raw materials to the crusher.

Jha explains: “The machines will only get about two hours off in 24 hours, and that’s only due to operator changeovers – otherwise it would be working all day.”

Al Fairuz won OCC over with a presentation on the TR60’s fitness for the tough environment, and the specifications that would enable it to move more material in less time and with less fuel.

Transmission and rear brake retardation systems come as standard, while a high capacity body with exhaust heating makes for excellent retention and cleaner dumping – thereby boosting productivity. The TR60 also features a spacious and ergonomic cab for maximum operator comfort.

The deal was then clinched after a visit to the neighbouring UAE to see the trucks in action.

“Once we received the order we made it our mission to continue to keep the customer happy,” noted Jha. “We performed the PDI (pre-delivery inspection) in January and all the staff at OCC were invited along, so the training process could begin before the trucks even arrived on site.”

After the handover, Al Fairuz spent a further two weeks on site at the quarry, training mechanics and operators to ensure the company receives the full benefit of the trucks.

Jha added: “Terex Trucks is a relatively new product line in Oman so to be awarded the tender over the global top two brands was amazing.”

Established in 1978, OCC was set up as part of a regeneration project initiated by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Four decades on, the company has three kilns and four cement mills with an annual capacity of 2.6 million tons and a Q4 2015 net profit of $12.2m.

The OCC is the only manufacturing company in Oman to have won His Majesty’s ‘Trophy for Best Factory’ a total of 10 times.

Terex Trucks, now part of the Volvo Construction Equipment product portfolio, produces all seven of its models in a factory located in Motherwell, Scotland, where it has been based for the last 65 years.
