Dubai Municipality’s waste management department has updated its fleet of automated beach cleaning equipment.Â
The Cherrington sand scraper machine separates waste components, such as gravel, broken glass, and cigarette butts.Â
Eng Abdul Majeed Sifar, director of the municipality’s waste management division, said: “[The machine] helps increase productivity and reduce dependence on the use of the human element.
“The idea of this product came through a number of brainstorming sessions that led to the adoption of best creative ideas and suggestions that have worked on the implementation of waste management.Â
“The sand scraper also has many other specialties, as it can be used to draw various awareness slogans on the sand depending on the nature of the event and campaigns carried out by the municipality.”Â
Sifar said the waste management department has also created a Beach Cleaning Team comprising 49 cleaners and seven supervisors to provide round-the-clock beach maintenance services.Â
This includes the removal of volumetric waste from the sea and oil and petroleum residue.Â
He added: “We will also try to increase the use of drones to monitor and control any violation such as people who throw waste at places not meant for that.
“We have been keen to provide modern means of waste collection along the coastline, and using drones will contribute to increasing the efficiency of many locations that are difficult to access through ordinary monitoring methods, such as the breakwater and some coastal areas.”Â
