Fleet management operations for buses at Dubai International Airport (DXB) have been restructured to optimise the vehicles’ efficiency, officials from Dubai Airports confirmed.

An intelligent traffic system (ITS) has been installed to boost the coordination of shuttle buses used by passengers from DXB’s Terminal 2 departure gates to the aircraft.

The system has, according to Dubai Media Office, increased the average number of passengers per bus trip from 40 to more than 60.

Bus trips have been reduced by 20%, thus limiting fuel consumption and alleviating congestion during peak hours.

The ITS has been installed as a move to increase DXB’s capacity as part of the DXB Plus Programme, which aims to elevate the airport’s capacity to 118 million passengers by 2023.

Remarking on the development, Bryan Thompson, senior vice president of development at Dubai Airports, said: “It is another world first for DXB, [and] it is the first time this technology has been implemented and used in this manner.

“The system is fail-safe, and provides a fully automated solution to coordinate bus scheduling which in turn reduces wait times for departing passengers.”Â
