Two firms with operations in Dubai are preparing to open new warehouses, despite the economic hardship in the emirate.

Terex, the multinational firm that owns the Genie brand of access platforms, is putting the finishing touches on a new office and parts centre in Dubai’s Investment Park.

Meanwhile, in the Jebel Ali freezone (Jafza), Swedish truck and bus company Scania are set to cut the ribbon on a new body fabrication plant.

Terex first opened an office in Dubai in 2007, which it outgrew very quickly. Its new centre will be 3250m2 of office and warehouse space that will hold a selection of equipment as well as parts.

“We are very pleased that our growing customer base of Genie and Terex equipment has driven the need to expand our operations, said Bradley Abrahams, the sales director for Terex Equipment Middle East LLC.

“With this investment in our new facility and in additional sales and technical support team members, we are now better positioned than ever to serve them.”

Scania’s new industrial plant will make the firm the first automotive assembler in the UAE. The firm will supply completed vehicles to the whole GCC.

Located in the 20,000m2 industrial site, the facility meets the highest environmental standards and is a Green Building, Gold LEED certified.

The installation will have the capacity for building bodies for about 1400 vehicles per year.

When first opened, the workshop will make specialised bodies for vehicles for construction haulage, such as tipper and concrete trucks, but the company said it will also be adapted for bus chassis assembly in the future.

Commenting on the new factory, Jafza manager Salma Hareb said: “Dubai and Jafza in particular, is well placed with the region’s largest container port offering all forms of logistical support to companies looking for easy access to Middle East, West Asia, the CIS and African markets.”
