The Department for Human Resources in Sharjah has released an official statement declaring a public holiday to commemorate the Islamic New Year.
According to the announcement, the holiday will begin on Thursday, July 20, and regular working hours will resume on Monday, July 24.
This holiday coincides with the weekend, granting employees in Sharjah an extended four-day weekend.
The UAE recently declared the Islamic New Year as a public holiday for both private and public sector workers on Friday, July 21.
This decision is in line with a Cabinet Resolution that outlines the official holidays for the public and private sectors in the UAE for the year 2023.
The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of a new lunar year. For most Muslims, the first day of Muharram signifies the start of the Islamic year.
