Hyundai Doosan Infracore, an HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Group subsidiary, has won a large-scale order for tank engines developed independently from Türkiye.
Earlier in February, Hyundai Doosan Infracore has announced that it has signed a KRW 313.1 contract to supply 1,500-horsepower tank engines to BMC, a defense company in Türkiye, the company wrote in a statement.
“This order makes Hyundai Doosan Infracore the first exclusive exporter of defense engines,” the statement noted.
In October 2021, Turkey and South Korea signed a letter of intent under which two Korean companies will supply engines and transmission mechanisms for the Altay, a modern Turkish main battle tank based on South Korean K2 Black Panther to be produced by BMC under design assistance and technology transfer by Hyundai Rotem.
Under the deals, South Korean manufacturers Doosan and S&T Dynamics would supply the know-how for engine and transmission mechanism for the Altay, which would be co-produced in Turkey.
Slated to be installed in Türkiye’s next-generation ‘Altay’ tank, the first batch worth KRW 110.2 billion ($83 million) will be supplied sequentially for three years from the second half of 2025 according to the contract.
“In accordance with the terms of the additional option purchase agreement, the second batchworth 202.9 billion won will be supplied from 2028 to 2030,” Hyundai Doosan Infracore said in the statement.
Leading up to this, the Turkish government conducted a field test evaluation of the Hyundai Doosan Infracore engine equipped in an “Altay” tank, and ultimately selected it as the engine for the “Altay” tank.
Commenting on the development a Hyundai Doosan Infracore official said, “Going forward, we will strive to develop the defense industry sector as one of the next-generation growth engines by expanding our export regions.”
